RESOURCE HIGHLIGHT: Regional Snapshots

NYSLGBTQ.org Regional Snapshots are 2-page region-specific highlights from the New York State LGBTQ+ Health and Human Services 2021 Needs Assessment [hyperlink to resource]. The snapshots provide a focused look at how LGBTQ+ people in New York State are experiencing health and human service needs, accessing services, and dealing with economic and social conditions. Taken together, they offer a clearer picture of the prevalent key issues and how needs vary across the state. The regional snapshots can help identify patterns, highlight disparities, and point to where more targeted, community-informed resources are needed across the state. This kind of information can be useful for local organizations and providers trying to understand who they are serving and where gaps may exist.

Key Areas

  • Health status, health access, and barriers to care: Overall self-reported health status, mental health concerns, health insurance coverage, and issues preventing access to healthcare. Frequently cited barriers to care include a lack of LGBTQ+ competent providers, logistical challenges with travel to services, stigma, and affordability.
  • Economic status and vulnerability: Structural and community factors that shape access to care include food, housing, and employment insecurity and gaps in local support networks.
  • Demographics: A breakdown of who is represented in the data by gender identity, sexual orientation, race and ethnicity, age, and education. Some regions include higher proportions of transgender and nonbinary respondents, while others reflect more racial and ethnic diversity.

Regional Snapshots are available for New York City, Mid-Hudson and Long Island, Western New York and Southern Tier, Finger Lakes and Central New York, Capital District, Mohawk Valley, and North Country
